Technical FAQ: Desktop CNC Chip Load, RPM & Deflection

1. What is the recommended feed rate and RPM for a 1/4-inch 2-flute end mill in Baltic Birch plywood on a Shapeoko or Onefinity?

For a 1/4-inch (0.250 in) 2-flute solid carbide end mill cutting Baltic Birch plywood on a desktop CNC router, target a chip load of 0.0035 inches per tooth at 18,000 RPM (Dial 3 on a Makita RT0701C or Dial 2 on a DeWalt DWP611). Using the formula Feed Rate = 18,000 RPM × 2 flutes × 0.0035 in = 126 IPM (3,200 mm/min) for pocketing, or 101 IPM (2,565 mm/min) for full-width slotting/profiling with a 0.125-inch depth of cut per pass and a 50 IPM plunge rate.

2. How do you calculate CNC router feed rate from chip load and spindle RPM?

CNC feed rate in Inches Per Minute (IPM) is calculated by multiplying Spindle Speed (RPM) by the Number of Cutter Flutes and the Target Chip Load per tooth (Feed Rate = RPM × Flutes × Chip Load). For example, running a 1/8-inch 1-flute O-flute bit in cast acrylic at 16,000 RPM with a 0.0025-inch chip load yields 16,000 × 1 × 0.0025 = 40 IPM (1,016 mm/min). Maintaining proper chip load ensures the cutting edges shear heat-carrying chips away rather than rubbing and friction-burning the material.

3. Why do industrial CNC chip load charts snap bits or stall desktop CNC routers?

Published manufacturer chip load tables from industrial tooling brands assume a 5-to-10 horsepower rigid cast-iron CNC gantry cutting at 1× to 2× bit diameter depth of cut. Desktop CNC routers (such as Shapeoko, X-Carve, and Onefinity) use 1.25 HP trim routers or 800W–1500W spindles with stepper motors and aluminum extrusion frames. To prevent stepper motor lost steps, tool deflection, and bit breakage on a desktop CNC, keep horizontal chip load healthy (0.001 to 0.004 in) to prevent rubbing, but limit axial Depth of Cut (DOC) to 0.5× bit diameter in wood and 0.1× to 0.15× bit diameter in 6061 aluminum.
